White oak is the hardest-working slab on the rack — heavy, stable, and tough enough for a family dining table or a restaurant bar. Pop’s Barn mills white oak live-edge slabs in Byram Township, NJ, from narrow bench stock up to 13-foot slabs and one-piece tops over 60″ wide, at $18 per board foot before the width multiplier.

What white oak looks like
Light tan to warm brown heartwood with a pale sapwood band at the live edge. Straight, open grain. Where the cut crosses the growth rings you’ll see ray fleck — the silvery flake pattern white oak is known for. It’s the look behind a lot of the best Northeast furniture and millwork.
What it’s good for
- Dining tables and islands that take real abuse — about 1,360 on the Janka hardness scale, a third harder than walnut
- Bar tops and restaurant counters
- Conference tables — wide one-piece tops
- Benches and outdoor-adjacent pieces — white oak’s closed cell structure resists rot better than most hardwoods (it’s what whiskey barrels are made of)
- Mantels and beams

What customers say
I was fortunate enough to stumble across Pop's Barn about a year ago, and I have never looked back. First and foremost - they are extremely knowledgeable and you are able to ask questions. Their inventory is second to none and they mill and kiln everything in house, so you know that you are getting quality. The products that I have purchased from them have been absolutely beautiful, including a large 12x4 foot oak slab that became my family dining room table. I have also purchased maple, black walnut, and other species - all of them were great. What also needs mentioning is the quality of people that Pops and Will are - working with them is like seeing old friends - they are welcoming, helpful, and always get back to me quickly with any request I may have. I look forward to a long partnership with them! You should too!
Bob had exactly the kind of material I was looking for. I wanted less traditionally desirable oak to make rustic trim and doors for my log cabin house. I want oak with lots of character and I found exactly what I was looking for at pops barn. He has a wide selection of locally found species.
