Air-drying takes roughly a year per inch of thickness and gets a slab to whatever the outdoor air allows — in the Northeast, usually the low-to-mid teens in moisture content. Kiln drying finishes the job to the 6–8% range indoor furniture needs. If the slab is going into a heated house or a New York apartment, you want kiln-dried or a metered reading that says it’s there.

How each works
- Air-drying: fresh slabs are stickered (stacked with spacers) under cover and left to give up water to the air. Slow, cheap, gentle on the wood. Can’t get below what the outdoor humidity allows.
- Kiln drying: slabs go into a controlled chamber that pulls moisture out on a schedule. Pop’s Barn runs an iDry AIR kiln in a 20-foot container on site. Gets the wood to indoor-furniture moisture and stabilizes it.
- Many slabs get both: air-dried first, then finished in the kiln.
Which do you need?
| Use | What to buy |
|---|---|
| Dining table, desk, island in a heated home | Kiln-dried |
| Anything going into a NYC apartment or office | Kiln-dried |
| Outdoor bench or porch table | Air-dried is fine |
| Event, set or short-run display | Air-drying stock is fine |
| Mantel or beam where some checking is welcome | Air-dried is fine |
| You’ll dry it yourself over a few years | Buy green and save money |
What goes wrong with wet slabs
- Cracking: the slab keeps shrinking after it’s built. Checks open at the ends and through knots.
- Cupping and twisting: a flattened top goes out of flat in the first heating season.
- Loose bases and joints: fasteners work loose as the wood moves.
How to tell if a slab is dry
Ask for a metered moisture reading, and ask when and how it was dried. “It’s been air-drying for a year” on a 3″ slab means it’s about a third of the way there. Every Pop’s Barn listing shows drying status and the month it was milled, and kiln-dried slabs get a reading on the spec sheet.
Questions we get
How long does it take to dry a live-edge slab?
Air-drying takes roughly a year per inch of thickness, so a 2.5″ slab needs about two and a half years. Kiln drying shortens that considerably and gets the wood to indoor-furniture moisture levels.
Should I buy an air-dried or kiln-dried slab?
For indoor furniture in a heated building, kiln-dried. For outdoor pieces, short-term installs, or if you plan to dry it yourself, air-dried is fine and costs less.
What moisture content should a slab be before building a table?
Around 6–8% for indoor furniture. Ask the seller for a metered reading.
Why did my live-edge table crack?
Usually because the slab wasn’t dry enough when it was built and kept shrinking indoors. Buy kiln-dried or confirm the moisture reading before you build.
