Plug in the size and species to get board feet and a ballpark price for a live-edge slab at Pop’s Barn rates. Measure width in three spots and average them — live edges don’t run straight.
Estimate only. Every slab is one of one — the price on the listing is the price. Air-drying stock is often listed below this.
How it works
Board feet = length × average width × thickness ÷ 144 (all in inches). That’s multiplied by the species rate, then by a width multiplier for slabs 30″ and wider. Full explanation and worked examples on the slab cost page.
| Species | Price per board foot |
|---|---|
| Black Walnut | $22 |
| Ambrosia Maple | $20 |
| Cherry | $18 |
| White Oak | $18 |
| Hard Maple | $15 |
| Red Oak | $13 |
| Hickory | $13 |
| Eastern Red Cedar | $13 |
| Black Locust | $13 |
| Elm | $13 |
| Soft Maple | $12 |
| Poplar | $10 |
| Slab width | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Under 30″ | ×1 |
| 30–39″ | ×1.15 |
| 40–49″ | ×1.3 |
| 50″ and wider | ×1.5 |
Sizing cheat sheet
| Project | Typical slab |
|---|---|
| Floating shelf | 36–60″ × 8–12″ × 2″ |
| Bench | 48–72″ × 14–18″ × 2–3″ |
| Coffee table | 48–60″ × 22–30″ × 2″ |
| Desk | 60–72″ × 28–32″ × 2″ |
| Mantel | 60–96″ × 8–12″ × 4–6″ |
| Dining table, 6 seats | 72–84″ × 36–40″ × 2–2.5″ |
| Dining table, 8 seats | 96″ × 40–42″ × 2.5″ |
| Dining table, 10 seats | 120″ × 42–44″ × 2.5–3″ |
Buy a little longer, wider and thicker than the finished size. You lose some to squaring the ends, trimming the edge and flattening.
How accurate is the slab price calculator?
It uses the same rates and multipliers we price from, so it’s close for most slabs. Figure, defects and drying status move individual prices up or down, and air-drying stock is often listed below the calculator number. The price on each listing is the actual price.
How do I measure a live-edge slab for board feet?
Length along the longest straight line, width in at least three places averaged together, and thickness at the thinnest usable point. Multiply them in inches and divide by 144.
