Why cookies crack, and how to live with it
End grain loses moisture fast, so a cookie shrinks more around the rim than the center. Most develop a radial check — a crack from the bark toward the pith — as they dry. Some people fill it with contrasting resin, some leave it. For event use, a fresh green cookie looks perfect for days to weeks; for furniture, buy kiln-dried.

Why do wood cookies crack?
The outer rings shrink faster than the center as the cookie dries, which splits it from the bark inward. Kiln-dried cookies have already done most of their moving.
