Sizing a mantel
- Length: usually the firebox width plus 12–24″ total overhang, or run to the walls on a built-in.
- Depth: 8–10″ is standard; 12″+ for a heavier look or to display things on.
- Thickness: 5–6″ reads as a real beam. Thinner looks like a shelf.
- Clearance: combustible mantels need clearance above the firebox opening under code and your fireplace or insert manufacturer’s instructions. Check before you pick a height.
Green blanks: what to know
Most mantel blanks on the rack are air-drying. Beams this thick dry slowly and can check (small cracks) as they do — on a mantel most people like that look. If you want it stable before install, ask about kiln-dried options.
