What walnut looks like
Dark chocolate heartwood, sometimes with purple or gray streaks, wrapped in a band of cream-colored sapwood right under the bark. That contrast is what makes a live-edge walnut slab — the pale sapwood outlines the edge. Some people love it, some want it gone; either way, pick the slab with the amount you like, because it doesn’t turn dark on its own.
Unlike cherry, which darkens with age, walnut tends to mellow slightly lighter and warmer over years in sunlight.
What walnut is good for
- Dining and kitchen tables — hard enough for daily use, stable once dry, and it hides wear well.
- Desks and conference tables
- Mantels and floating shelves
- Bar tops and islands
- Headboards and wall pieces — where the figure is the whole point
Walnut is moderately hard (about 1,010 on the Janka scale — softer than oak or hard maple, harder than cherry). It machines cleanly and takes a finish beautifully. It is not the wood for a workbench you plan to beat on.

Drying walnut
Walnut air-dries well but slowly — plan on roughly a year per inch of thickness. A 2.5″ slab milled this year isn’t ready to build with until a couple of years out unless it goes through the kiln. Each listing shows whether the slab is air-drying, in the kiln, or kiln-dried, and the date it was milled.
Where our walnut comes from
Northeast trees — storm-downed, yard removals, old farm walnuts. Every slab is milled, stickered and dried on our compound, and every listing shows the month it came off the mill.
Questions we get
How much is a black walnut live-edge slab in NJ?
At Pop’s Barn, black walnut is $22 per board foot, with a multiplier for slabs 30″ and wider. Bench and shelf slabs run a few hundred dollars; one-piece dining slabs 40–54″ wide run from about $1,800 to $4,000.
Where can I buy black walnut slabs in North Jersey?
Pop’s Barn in Byram Township, Sussex County, stocks black walnut live-edge slabs from narrow shelf stock to 12-foot slabs over 50″ wide, all priced online. Local pickup, and we load.
Is walnut good for a dining table?
Yes. It’s hard enough for daily use, stable once properly dried, and it hides everyday wear better than light woods. For a table that takes real abuse, white oak or hard maple are harder.
What’s the light-colored wood on the edge of a walnut slab?
Sapwood — the living outer layer of the tree. It stays pale. Some buyers keep it for contrast; others pick slabs with less of it.
Can I buy a walnut slab that’s ready to build with?
Look for kiln-dried in the listing. Air-drying walnut can be bought now and kiln-dried here before pickup — call for the schedule.
Looking for a specific size? Call 973-524-4282 — if it’s not listed yet, it may be on the drying rack.
What customers say
Incredible wood selection and fantastic service! All of the my walnut for the build out in the pic was sourced from Pops Barn and the quality was impeccable!
Found Pops Barn on Instagram, I was looking to work with some nicer wood and saw he was doing a fundraiser giveaway. I showed up and asked some questions only a newbie would ask and got no judgement, was really thankful for that. Picked up and nice sized walnut slab. Would definitely recommend!
