What “rough-sawn” means
Straight off the sawmill, not planed. The faces carry saw marks and the thickness is full — a rough 1″ board is a true inch, not the ¾″ you get at a big-box store. You plane and joint it to your final size, or use it rough for a rustic look.
What we stock
- Hardwood lumber: cherry, white ash, black locust, poplar, and other species as the logs come in
- Eastern red cedar: aromatic, rot-resistant — closet lining, chests, outdoor projects
- Pitch pine: dimensional stock only
- Spalted boards when we have them — dark zone lines from early-stage fungus, prized for small projects
Every species is listed with its price per board foot in inventory.
Deck and trailer boards
Heavy rough-sawn oak, milled thick and cut to the length your build calls for. Trailer decking, ramp boards, deck framing, horse stalls — stock that’s meant to get rained on and loaded heavy. Sized and priced per job; send the dimensions and quantity.
How to buy lumber
- Board feet: thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12. A rough 1″ × 8″ × 8 ft board is 5.3 board feet.
- Buy extra: plan on 15–25% more than your finished cut list for planing, defects and cutoffs.
- Kiln-dried vs. green: for furniture and interior trim, kiln-dried. For outdoor framing and trailer decks, green or air-dried works.

What customers say
I have worked with many sawmills over the years, And non as pleasant as Pops Barn. I spoke with a gentleman named Bob, He had my cut list ready for pick up within 48 Hours of placing the order. Beautiful saw cut planks for my trailer.
Bob had exactly the kind of material I was looking for. I wanted less traditionally desirable oak to make rustic trim and doors for my log cabin house. I want oak with lots of character and I found exactly what I was looking for at pops barn. He has a wide selection of locally found species.
Came across Pops Barn on Marketplace and decided to stop by for some Hickory. Quite the place! Great selection of dimensional and live edge wood for all kinds of projects at very fair prices!
